One of our three goals is to broaden the horizons of participants and staff, and one way we're working towards that goal is by offering a new mentoring program for students at Greensboro High School.
The program began with a pilot event, the Work Ready Workshop in March of 2017. Students and professionals gathered in Greensboro for a day-long workshop that covered resume writing, interview skills, and basic job skills.
In the 2017-2018 school year, the program evolved. Six juniors from Greensboro High School were paired with a college mentor and a professional mentor. Throughout the year, with the help of their mentors, mentees completed an ACT prep course, visited at least one college or university, and shadowed a professional in their field of interest. At the closing banquet in April, all mentees received a laptop to help them in their upcoming senior year of high school.
In 2018-2019, we expanded the program again. This year, 6 juniors and 6 seniors from Greensboro High School were paired with a college mentor and a professional mentor. Seniors participated in a FAFSA workshop, and all students took on ACT test prep, attended a work readiness workshop and job shadowing event, and visited a college or vocational school of their choosing.
